Russia Pledges Increased Fertilizer Exports to India
Vladimir Putin committed to increasing fertilizer exports to India to stabilize the Indian agricultural sector amid West Asia supply disruptions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will increase fertilizer exports to India to support the Indian agricultural sector. The commitment was made during a meeting in Moscow on August 24, 2026, with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
India currently imports roughly 70% of its fertilizer requirements and is facing supply complications caused by the West Asia crisis and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. To manage elevated global prices, the Indian Department of Fertilisers has requested a 100% increase in its subsidy allocation for the 2027 fiscal year.
Following the announcement, Indian fertilizer stocks experienced a significant spike, with Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore rising more than 14%. Putin noted that bilateral trade between the two nations grew in the first half of 2026, recovering from a decline seen in 2025.
