Trump Calls Cuba Failed State at UN General Assembly

During his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Donald Trump labeled Cuba a "completely failed state" and predicted the collapse of its communist government. He asserted that his administration seeks a "fundamental change" in Cuba and expressed a willingness to use military power if necessary to achieve this goal. The remarks prompted the Cuban delegation, led by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, to walk out of the assembly hall in protest.

Trump accused the Cuban regime of spending decades coordinating with far-left revolutionaries and subversion networks within the United States. Citing a July 2026 State Department report, he linked Havana to domestic groups including Antifa, the Democratic Socialists of America, and the Communist Party USA. These accusations follow a series of sanctions imposed since January 2026 targeting Cuba's financial, energy, and military sectors, as well as the Cuban intelligence service and the Instituto Cubano de Relaciones Amistosas del Pueblo.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading discussions with Havana regarding a potential political transition toward new leadership and the possible end of the trade embargo. Rubio stated that U.S. businesses and the Cuban diaspora are prepared to assist in an economic transition if political reforms occur. However, Cuban officials have denied that formal negotiations are taking place. Foreign Minister Rodríguez Parrilla characterized the U.S. embargo and energy blockades as a policy of "economic asphyxiation" and described the blockade as "genocidal."

In the same address, Trump also characterized Mexican cartels as the "ISIS of Western Hemisphere" and vowed that Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon.
