Trump Administration Dismantles Foreign Aid and USAID

The administration of Donald Trump is dismantling the long-standing U.S. foreign policy of providing international aid and moral leadership to secure global stability. The administration has cut more than 80% of grants to the developing world, dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, and suspended portions of Pepfar, the global HIV/AIDS program.

President Trump stated that the U.S. will no longer provide foreign aid giveaways, shifting instead to a loan-based system. This shift toward isolationism includes withdrawing from international climate agreements and global health organizations, as well as pausing the enforcement of domestic corruption laws.

These policy changes have coincided with a decline in the global perception of U.S. influence, with some polls indicating that respondents now view China as a more positive influence on world affairs. In response, the European Union and authorities in France, Switzerland, and the UK have established new environmental standards and anti-corruption task forces to fill the resulting vacuum.
