Steve Witkoff Calls Vladimir Putin Humanitarian After Prisoner Release
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff sparked backlash after calling Vladimir Putin a humanitarian following the release of detained American citizen Stephen Hubbard.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "humanitarian" during a televised meeting in St. Petersburg on October 21, 2026. The comments followed the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired teacher and U.S. Air Force veteran who had been imprisoned in Russia since 2022. The exchange occurred after Putin similarly characterized President Donald Trump as a humanitarian.
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance defended the remarks as necessary diplomacy to secure Hubbard's freedom. Trump stated that the release was an unprecedented situation for Russia and required no concessions or swaps from Washington. However, the praise drew sharp condemnation from Republican Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, as well as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who labeled the phrasing as "appeasement."
The diplomatic encounter coincided with a brutal Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv that injured six people and damaged medical facilities and residential areas. Despite the violence, the Kremlin indicated a willingness to resume technical-level trilateral talks with the U.S. and Ukraine in mid-November to discuss security measures and troop deployments, with Abu Dhabi mentioned as a potential site. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov noted, however, that current peace proposals lack substance.
