Qatar Mediates U.S.-Iran Deal to Pause West Asia Conflict

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is coordinating a 30-day ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran through a proposed 14-point memorandum.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is leading a diplomatic effort to establish a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Starting May 7, 2026, Al Thani signaled a high probability of a deal, coordinating with mediators in Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia to bridge gaps between Washington and Tehran.

Following meetings with Vice President JD Vance in Washington, Al Thani met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami on May 9. The officials discussed a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding designed to implement a 30-day pause in hostilities as a precursor to permanent negotiations. U.S. officials noted Qatar's effectiveness in negotiations, though the process occurred amid regional volatility, including the interception of Iranian drones and missiles by the UAE.

President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio indicated they expect a response from Tehran by Friday. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated the proposal remains under review and dismissed U.S. deadlines. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi further criticized U.S. military actions, claiming they undermine diplomatic progress. Al Thani continues to urge all parties to respond positively to mediation to ensure a sustainable agreement that protects the interests of Gulf states and maintains the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
