U.S. President Donald Trump and newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham held their first phone conversations on July 20 and 21 to discuss bilateral relations, trade, the military alliance, and the demining of the Strait of Hormuz. The leaders agreed to meet in the near future to address mutual interests.

A central point of discussion involves reports that the UK government may reverse its ban on new North Sea oil and gas drilling. Trump claimed on Truth Social that Burnham would open the region all the way, asserting that residents of Aberdeen are dancing in the streets over the prospect. He suggested such a move would transform the United Kingdom from a poverty-stricken disaster into one of the richest countries in the world.

While Burnham has not formally confirmed a policy reversal, speculation suggests he may authorize drilling at the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields to lower domestic energy costs. Labour Deputy Leader Lucy Powell described the shift as a change of emphasis and a more pragmatic approach, though she maintained a commitment to the 2024 manifesto pledge to issue no new drilling licenses.

Burnham took office on Monday following the resignation of Keir Starmer. In his first address at 10 Downing Street, Burnham pledged to implement a new economic model and dismantle the centralized Westminster model of government to restore national stability.
