President Donald Trump declared Iran a failed nation on Monday, asserting that the country is economically and militarily broken. The statement follows a weekend of military escalation that began Sunday when U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island to prevent the deployment of rockets and mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at U.S. bases in Jordan, where officials reported intercepting eight missiles. Alongside these military actions, the U.S. is intensifying economic pressure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the implementation of weekly secondary sanctions targeting banks that facilitate Iranian transactions.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged the severity of the crisis, noting that a naval blockade and sanctions have caused imports and exports to drop nearly 35%. He further reported that inflation reached 66% in July. While some observers suggest the Iranian economy is nearing collapse due to falling oil exports to China, others warn that such pressure may drive Tehran to target U.S. economic assets in the Gulf.
