Canada Pitches Open Trade at G20 Meetings in Milwaukee
Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu met with G20 officials in Milwaukee to promote Canada as a predictable trading partner amid U.S. trade disruptions.
G20 trade ministers concluded two days of meetings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 1, 2026. The gathering took place against a backdrop of global trade disruptions linked to the trade agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Maninder Sidhu, Canada's International Trade Minister, used the summit to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and officials from India and the European Union. Sidhu sought to pitch Canada as an "open, predictable and rules-based" trading partner. While Sidhu handled these diplomatic engagements, formal negotiations with the United States remain the responsibility of Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
The Canadian government is currently seeking to reduce its economic reliance on the United States following repeated U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. These efforts coincide with an upcoming European Union summit in Montreal scheduled for later in October.
