Türkiye to Unveil Military Hub at Ankara NATO Summit
Türkiye will reveal its new Ay Yildiz Joint Headquarters during a July 7-8 NATO summit in Ankara aimed at addressing U.S. funding disputes and Russian threats.
The Government of Türkiye will unveil the Ay Yildiz (Crescent Star) Joint Headquarters during the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in Ankara on July 7-8, 2026. The next-generation military hub integrates the command structure of the Turkish Armed Forces, including the Ministry of National Defense, the General Staff, and the Land, Naval, and Air Forces. Designed with ballistic protection and CBRN countermeasures, the facility will host a reception for senior NATO officials as Türkiye prepares to lead the Allied Reaction Force in 2028.
The summit arrives amid significant tension regarding U.S. commitment to the alliance. President Donald Trump has labeled NATO a "paper tiger" and threatened withdrawal over disputes involving Greenland and the war in Iran. In response, European members and Canada are working toward a target of spending 5% of GDP on defense within a decade to maintain U.S. support.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has further escalated the pressure by announcing a review of troop deployments in Europe and threatening to withhold dues from allies who fail to meet spending goals. Alongside these financial disputes, NATO leaders intend to address the long-term threat posed by Russia and the challenge of sustaining military aid for Ukraine.
