Iran and Oman Agree to Partially Reopen Strait of Hormuz

The Government of Iran and the Government of Oman have reached an agreement in principle to partially reopen the Strait of Hormuz, establishing temporary shipping lanes to resume maritime traffic. The arrangement, which may last between 60 days and four months, involves specific entry and exit routes and is pending final approval from Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the Supreme National Security Council. The diplomatic movement follows a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to call off planned attacks on Iran.

The agreement comes after six months of conflict that began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched an air war on Iran, prompting Tehran to mine and close the strait. While Donald Trump characterized the deal as a step toward wider peace, Iranian officials clarified that the arrangement is a temporary measure and not a full reopening. Some reports indicate the draft agreement would exclude U.S. and Israeli ships and require compensation from nations that harmed Iran, though U.S. officials disputed these claims, asserting the strait is an international waterway.

Security remains volatile in the region. On August 6, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center reported twin explosions near Oman, and Iranian naval forces later reported a confrontation with hostile targets near Qeshm Island. Despite these incidents, Brent crude prices fell below $80 per barrel on hopes that the reopening will restore energy flows and lead to negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program.
