Texas GOP Redistricting Strategy Faces Latino Voter Shift

Texas Republicans implemented a new congressional map last year at the request of Donald Trump, but the strategy may backfire ahead of the midterm elections. A Cook Political and TelevisaUnivision poll indicates Latino voters now favor Democratic candidates by a 2-1 margin, citing rising prices and the economic impact of indiscriminate immigration raids as primary drivers for the shift.

The redistricting process was marked by intense political conflict. Governor Greg Abbott called a special session that prioritized the new map over flood relief for Kerr County. During this period, state Democrats fled Texas to block the map, and state Republicans allegedly held State Representative Nicole Collier in the state House after she refused to be followed by police. In response to the Texas map, California launched its own redistricting effort to neutralize GOP gains, which could result in five new Democratic seats nationally.

These trends are manifesting in specific races, such as Texas' 15th Congressional District. The Republican Party has invested $2 million into the re-election campaign of Representative Monica De La Cruz to counter challenger Bobby Pulido, a Tejano musician. Despite Donald Trump winning the district by 18 points in 2024, the Cook Political Report now classifies the race as a tossup due to voter concerns over housing and gas prices.
