Trump Threatens NATO Allies and UK Falklands Support Over Iran War

Donald Trump is considering punitive measures against NATO allies, including reviewing UK sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, after they refused to support U.S. operations against Iran.

A leaked internal memo from the United States Department of War, authored by policy adviser Elbridge Colby, reveals that the Trump administration is weighing punitive measures against NATO allies for failing to support U.S.-led operations in the war with Iran. The tensions stem from a February 28 Israeli strike in Tehran that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, an operation supported by the CIA. President Donald Trump criticized allies who denied the U.S. basing and overflight rights, specifically targeting Spain and the United Kingdom.

The proposed penalties include suspending Spain from key NATO positions—despite NATO officials noting the treaty has no mechanism for expulsion—and reviewing U.S. diplomatic support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Trump also threatened the UK with tariffs if it does not abolish a 2% digital services tax on American firms.

In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the UK government reaffirmed that sovereignty over the Falklands is non-negotiable and that the islanders' right to self-determination remains paramount. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez dismissed the leaked reports, stating Spain only collaborates with allies within international law. Meanwhile, Argentine President Javier Milei has capitalized on the U.S. openness to a policy shift, asserting that the islands will always be Argentine and calling for bilateral negotiations.

Diplomatic friction persists as King Charles III prepares for a state visit to Washington, though Trump suggested the visit could repair relations. Simultaneously, the U.S. and its allies remain divided over the strategic reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth criticizing European allies for free-riding on American security.
