Canada and the United States are co-hosting the 28th annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense conference in Victoria amid severe diplomatic and trade tensions.
The Canadian and United States militaries are co-hosting the 28th annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense conference in Victoria, British Columbia, from August 31 to September 2. Presided over by General Jennie Carignan and Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, the event gathers senior military leaders from 32 nations to coordinate collective security in the Indo-Pacific region.
The conference takes place during a period of intense diplomatic friction between the two host nations. President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada and threatened to annex the country, while Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by placing penalties on U.S. goods.
Despite these political conflicts, Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty asserts that military and intelligence cooperation remains integrated. Canada has also invited a Chinese delegation led by General Yang Zhibin, marking a shift toward open communication to prevent military confrontation and moving away from previous official documents that categorized China as an enemy.
