Trump and Zelenskyy Warm Ties Amid US-Iran War

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have entered a period of diplomatic warming following a volatile start to their relationship. This shift occurs against the backdrop of the US-Israeli war with Iran, which began on February 28. To secure continued US support, Zelenskyy has positioned Ukraine as a strategic asset by providing military experts and defensive drone technology to Gulf allies to counter Iranian Shahed drones.

Zelenskyy further pledged to share intelligence suggesting Russia provides satellite surveillance to help Iran target US facilities. This transactional approach coincided with a meeting in Kyiv between Zelenskyy and influencer Laura Loomer, who later stated she had been misled by Russian propaganda. While Trump praised Zelenskyy at a Nato summit in Ankara, he has remained vacillating regarding a promise to allow Ukraine to develop Patriot missile interceptors.

Diplomatic tensions persist as Ukraine faces accusations of escalating conflict after striking an Iranian commercial vessel on the Caspian Sea. Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha contacted Iran following the incident to express that Ukraine's actions are intended for national defense and to avoid unnecessary escalation.
