Trump Declares Energy Ceasefire Amid U.S. Pressure on Ukraine
Donald Trump announced an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine while the U.S. threatens to cut intelligence and procurement to ensure compliance.
President Donald Trump declared an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, stating the agreement was effective immediately and that both parties had agreed. To enforce the truce, the Government of the United States is threatening to block the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List procurement system and halt intelligence sharing to pressure Kyiv into ending deep strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Shortly after the announcement, Russian forces launched drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a power substation in Zhytomyr and a gas-production facility in the Kharkiv region. In response, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is prepared to halt long-range strikes on Russian refineries only if Moscow reciprocates by stopping attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure and civilians.
European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas criticized the narrow focus of the truce, arguing that a refinery-specific ceasefire disproportionately benefits Russia due to its extensive refinery network compared to Ukraine's single facility. While Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the ceasefire, noting only that contacts continue, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned against trusting Russian promises, urging observers to look at Moscow's actions instead.
