Republicans Hold Southwestern Pennsylvania Seats Amid National Blue Wave

Republicans secured key victories and held incumbents in southwestern Pennsylvania despite Democrats gaining majorities in the U.S. Capitol and the Pennsylvania state government.

Democratic candidates achieved a blue wave in the 2026 midterm elections, securing majorities in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, while Governor Josh Shapiro won re-election in Pennsylvania. Local party chairs attributed these national results to voter dissatisfaction with the economy and the policies of President Donald Trump.

Despite the statewide and national trend, Republicans maintained a strong presence in southwestern Pennsylvania. In the Johnstown area, incumbents won by significant margins, including U.S. Representative John Joyce with 67.54% of the vote and U.S. Representative Guy Reschenthaler with 57.57%. State Representatives Frank Burns and Leslie Moss also retained their seats with 68.4% and 59.1% of the vote, respectively.

In other parts of the region, Republicans swept six competitive state House seats in districts connected to Washington and Greene counties. Newcomer Ben Humble won the 50th District, and Scott Timko flipped a seat back to GOP control by defeating Brandon Dukes. However, the Democratic trend was visible in some areas; Hadley Hass defeated incumbent Republican Valerie Gaydos to flip a seat, and established Republicans like Mike Kelly and Guy Reschenthaler saw their margins of victory decrease compared to 2024.
