U.S. Pledges $1 Billion Security Aid to Colombia

The Trump administration announced plans to provide $1 billion in security assistance to Colombia following the inauguration of President Abelardo De La Espriella on August 8, 2026. The funding, which requires cooperation with the U.S. Congress, is intended to strengthen Colombian security forces through the integration of U.S. technology, improved defense-spending efficiency, and coordinated military operations.

As part of this renewed partnership, the U.S. State Department welcomed Colombia into the Shield of the Americas, a military alliance dedicated to combating drug trafficking. President De La Espriella, a right-wing politician endorsed by Donald Trump, was sworn into office in Cali to emphasize his commitment to fighting armed groups.

This shift marks a pivot in diplomatic relations after years of public disagreements between Donald Trump and the previous leftist president, Gustavo Petro, regarding Caribbean drug-interdiction operations and the conflict in Gaza. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche led the presidential delegation to the inauguration ceremony.
