Trump Directs Justice Department to Block Election Results

President Donald Trump directed the Justice Department to file lawsuits blocking election certifications in Alaska and mail-in ballot counting in California.

President Donald Trump directed the United States Department of Justice to intervene in the midterm elections through a series of legal challenges in Alaska and California. In Alaska, the department filed a federal lawsuit to block the certification of the Senate election if incumbent Senator Dan S. Sullivan loses by a narrow margin, arguing that a candidate with a nearly identical name could confuse voters. Trump explicitly claimed responsibility for the legal action.

Simultaneously, the department targeted California by filing a suit to block the counting of 20,000 mail-in ballots. The department also sent letters to California election officials demanding the identification and removal of noncitizens from voter rolls. Attorney General Todd Blanche defended these interventions as being based on federal law.

While the department pursued these lawsuits, Harmeet Dhillon, head of the civil rights division, downplayed the possibility of election interference during a media interview. Critics and former officials have characterized the moves as an attempt to mobilize the Justice Department as an instrument of executive power to undermine faith in the election process.
