Trump Downplays China Punishments After Election Interference Claims

Donald Trump downplayed the prospect of punishing China for alleged election interference during a Tuesday press conference at the White House. This shift follows a primetime address where the president claimed China illicitly acquired 220 million U.S. voter files starting in 2020, calling it the largest compromise of election data in history.

During the press conference, Trump suggested that the U.S. engages in similar activities, stating that the relationship is not a one-way street. He further noted that China might be different today than it was during the 2020 cycle. While intelligence officials acknowledge foreign attempts to influence public opinion, they maintain there is no credible evidence that foreign actors altered vote totals in the 2020 election.

Trump has used these allegations to promote the SAVE America Act, which mandates photo ID for voters, though Senate Republican leaders indicate they lack the votes to advance the bill. Despite Representative Anna Paulina Luna urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to revoke over 265,000 Chinese student visas, the White House continues to plan a state visit for President Xi Jinping in September.
