House Democrats Demand US Acknowledge Israel's Nuclear Program

Approximately 30 Democratic lawmakers, led by Joaquin Castro, sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 6, 2026, demanding that the Trump administration publicly acknowledge Israel's undeclared nuclear weapons program. The lawmakers requested a detailed explanation of Israel's nuclear capabilities, doctrine, and enrichment capacities by May 18. They argued that the United States cannot maintain a coherent nonproliferation policy for the Middle East while observing a policy of official silence during the ongoing war against Iran.

The group specifically requested an assessment of risks to U.S. citizens should Iran strike the Dimona nuclear research center, following a March missile attack that injured dozens of residents. Castro asserted that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to be informed about the nuclear balance in the region to prevent miscalculation and escalation.

This move challenges the long-standing policy of nuclear opacity, or amimut, which Israel and the U.S. have maintained for half a century to preserve regional stability. While Israel continues to neither confirm nor deny possessing nuclear weapons, the issue has gained public visibility. President Donald Trump and White House advisor David Sacks have recently addressed the possibility of Israeli nuclear use in public contexts, though Trump has stated that Israel would not take such an action.
