Claire Ainsley Urges Centre-Left Shift in New Book

Political strategist Claire Ainsley argues in her new book that the centre-left must prioritize social mobility and government agency to counter right-wing populism.

Political strategist Claire Ainsley has released a book titled "Control: How We Lost It and How to Take It Back," arguing that centre-left politicians must rewire government to combat right-wing populism and a widespread sense of public impotence. Ainsley, a former policy director for Keir Starmer and current consultant for the Progressive Policy Institute, contends that current leaders lack the means of power to address complex threats such as economic insecurity and artificial intelligence.

She advocates for a transition away from simple wealth redistribution toward a "politics of progress" focused on individual agency, social mobility, and stricter border control. Ainsley also calls for the government to take responsibility for pandemic-related harms and the mental health crisis affecting teenagers.

Regarding current leadership, Ainsley notes that Andy Burnham has made a strong start in restoring order. However, she warns that Labour MPs must remain unified behind him to avoid appearing chaotic to the public.
