Netanyahu Reveals Secret Call to Stop Syrian Druze Massacres
Benjamin Netanyahu revealed he used a direct phone call and airstrikes in July 2025 to force Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to stop massacres of Druze civilians.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that he conducted a direct phone call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in July 2025 to halt massacres of the Druze community in As-Suwayda. Netanyahu described the conversation as short and sharp, asserting that the call and accompanying Israeli military actions forced the cessation of violence. The 2025 conflict involved clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes that escalated into atrocities committed by Syrian regime forces and allied gunmen.
To compel the ceasefire, the Israel Defense Forces launched airstrikes targeting the Syrian Defense Ministry and a site near the presidential palace in Damascus. Netanyahu stated that the strike on the Defense Ministry happened just like that. While Israeli officials emphasized their commitment to protecting the Druze, President al-Sharaa accused Israel of attempting to destabilize Syria and sow division among its people.
Defense Minister Israel Katz alleged that al-Sharaa is currently preparing to resume attacks on the Druze population if Netanyahu is not re-elected in upcoming elections. The Israeli military also reinforced the border during the crisis to prevent Israeli Druze from entering Syria to join the fighting.
