Emmanuel Macron Visits London for Talks With Andy Burnham

French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to London next week for bilateral discussions with Andy Burnham, who became British Prime Minister on July 20 following the resignation of Keir Starmer. This visit marks the first time an EU leader has visited Britain since Burnham took office.

The leaders intend to focus on combating illegal migration and improving the diplomatic relationship between London and Brussels. As part of the visit, Macron will attend the official opening of the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum, featuring a 900-year-old artifact loaned to the UK as a gesture of friendship.

These talks follow Burnham's recent diplomatic trip to Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Council President Antonio Costa. While Burnham has stated that the UK had to be "bolder" in getting closer to the bloc, he has not indicated any intention to abandon the restrictions outlined in the Labour party's latest election manifesto. A postponed UK-EU summit is now scheduled for October to address youth mobility, tuition fees, and trade.
