Mark Carney Threatens Legal Action Over Stelco Layoffs

Prime Minister Mark Carney threatened legal action against steelmaker Stelco and its parent company, Cleveland-Cliffs, following the announcement of up to 500 layoffs at facilities in Hamilton and Lake Erie. Carney stated the company breached binding five-year undertakings to maintain unionized employment levels that were established during the approval of its foreign takeover.

The job losses coincide with the Trump administration's imposition of 50 per cent steel and aluminum tariffs on global imports. In addition to the tariffs, the United States implemented a new ban on motorcycles, dairy byproducts, and certain Canadian alcoholic drinks.

U.S. senior trade adviser Peter Navarro criticized Canada for relying on lobbyists instead of negotiating new trade deals. While Carney expressed a willingness to negotiate a mutually advantageous arrangement, he stated that Canada will seek to reduce its trade dependence on the United States by finding other global partners. Domestically, Conservative shadow minister Shuvaloy Majumdar criticized the Liberal government for negotiating from a position of weakness.
