Ukraine Isolates Crimea Through Massive Drone Campaign

Ukraine launched a wide-scale drone offensive targeting Russian energy and logistics, forcing the suspension of civilian fuel sales in Crimea and causing widespread power outages.

Throughout June 2026, Volodymyr Zelenskyy directed a strategic drone campaign to isolate Russian-occupied Crimea and degrade Russia's war economy. Terming the operations long-range sanctions, Ukraine targeted the Kerch Strait ferries, the Kerch Bridge, and the railway bridge over the North Crimean Canal near Rozdolne. These strikes, combined with attacks on oil depots and refineries as far as Siberia, crippled Russian military logistics and triggered a severe fuel crisis. In response, Crimean Governor Sergei Aksyonov suspended gasoline sales to the general public, restricting fuel exclusively to government agencies.

The campaign escalated with massive drone waves targeting Russian airspace. On June 22 and June 27, Russian authorities reported intercepting hundreds of drones—reaching a peak of 660 in a single night—including dozens targeting Moscow, which caused temporary closures of four major airports. Simultaneous strikes on the Balaklava and Kerch thermal power plants left approximately half of the Crimean peninsula without electricity and forced businesses in Sevastopol to adopt daytime-only operations.

Russia retaliated with missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, killing civilians in Kharkiv and Sumy and targeting a cargo vessel in the Black Sea. While Vladimir Putin claimed Ukrainian drones aimed to destabilize Russian society, Zelenskyy characterized the effort as a 40-day influence operation to compel Russia to end the war. The strategic pressure has reportedly reduced Russian military cargo traffic to certain southern fronts by 71% and pushed the Russian Black Sea Fleet out of Sevastopol.
