President Pezeshkian Defends US Deal Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has defended a June memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States intended to end the current conflict, asserting that now is the best time for an agreement due to national cohesion. Despite advocating for diplomacy, Pezeshkian described the U.S. as colonialist and criminal, accusing Washington of violating the MoU by pursuing alternative shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz rather than adhering to procedures agreed upon with Iran and Oman.

These diplomatic efforts coincide with escalating military tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would be hit hard if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. Simultaneously, reports emerged of naval engagements between Iranian military units and hostile targets near the Strait, followed by two explosions on Qeshm Island, though local officials in Hormozgan province denied any direct damage occurred.

Addressing internal stability, Pezeshkian refuted rumors of his resignation and denied that internal divisions were undermining the government. He credited coordinated governance for maintaining normalcy for citizens despite attacks on critical infrastructure. On August 8, Pezeshkian declared that Iran is facing an all-out war and pledged his absolute loyalty to the decisions of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, stating he is willing to face personal risk, including assassination, to support the state's resolve.
