Trump Pushes Peace Deal as Russia-Ukraine Casualties Hit Record
President Donald Trump is mediating a peace proposal between Russia and Ukraine amid record Russian casualties and escalating missile and drone strikes.
President Donald Trump is urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to reach a settlement with Russia, warning that Moscow possesses an unlimited supply of manpower. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has mediated talks in St. Petersburg and Oslo, presenting proposals that would see Ukraine cede the Donbas region in exchange for NATO security guarantees. While both nations expressed openness to November negotiations, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov noted that certain nuances of the U.S. proposals do not entirely satisfy Russia.
These diplomatic efforts coincide with a violent escalation. Russia launched three waves of ballistic missiles at Kyiv and other regions, with Zelenskiy reporting that 21 missiles hit numerous sites. In response, Ukraine sent 630 drones toward Moscow and other Russian territories, killing one person in Belgorod. Despite the strikes, the two nations continued to exchange war dead.
On the battlefield, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported record one-day Russian losses between October 21 and 22, with at least 2,250 personnel killed or seriously injured. Ukrainian officials attribute the spike to intensified drone strikes, claiming total Russian losses have exceeded 1.5 million since 2022. Meanwhile, tensions persist between Kyiv and Washington over the Trump administration's decision to lift sanctions on Moscow. Restrictions on Starlink satellite services were reportedly eased following a conversation between Trump and Elon Musk.
