US Ambassador Tom Barrack Defends Iran Regime in Doha
US Ambassador Tom Barrack argued against labeling Iran an evil regime, contradicting the official stance of the Donald Trump administration during a security forum in Qatar.
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack sparked a diplomatic rift within the U.S. government after stating at the Global Security Forum in Doha that Iran's government is "not an evil regime." Barrack, who also serves as the special envoy for Syria and Iraq, described the Iranian government as a theocracy with religious practices that should be respected. He advocated for a negotiated settlement, arguing that previous U.S. attempts at regime change in the region have failed.
While Barrack defended the Iranian government, he distinguished it from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which he labeled an adversary. These comments directly contradict the official position of the Donald Trump administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have both used the term "evil" to describe the regime, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently characterized Iran as the primary driver of instability in the Middle East.
The internal disagreement comes as the United States continues a military campaign and economic sanctions targeting Iran's naval and nuclear capabilities. This conflict has persisted for nearly eight months as the U.S. seeks to neutralize Iran's ballistic missile arsenal and nuclear threats.
