Asian Markets Rebound as Fed Chair Withholds Rate Guidance

Asian stock markets recovered from an AI-driven sell-off while Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to provide forward guidance on interest rate hikes.

Asian equity markets rebounded on Friday after a sharp technology sell-off triggered by concerns over artificial intelligence financing and the debt levels of cloud provider CoreWeave. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.8% and South Korea's Kospi climbed between 2.8% and 3.6%. Confidence in the AI trade was partially restored following comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang regarding CoreWeave.

In contrast, Indonesia's equity benchmark plunged 11% after MSCI announced plans to remove the country from its emerging market status. Meanwhile, Taiwan experienced record foreign equity outflows despite a slight market gain.

Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, declined to provide forward guidance on interest rate hikes during the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. In the energy sector, oil futures declined as the International Energy Agency planned further releases of crude and diesel. The United States government is also considering lifting sanctions on certain shadow fleet vessels to lower global freight rates, though geopolitical tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthis continue to support oil prices.
