Trump Halts Canada Trade Talks Over Anti-Tariff Ads

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed in October 2025, shortly after Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney had reached a tentative interim agreement. The proposed deal focused on uranium, energy, steel, aluminum, and the Keystone XL pipeline. Trump attributed the breakdown to a C$75 million anti-tariff advertising campaign launched by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, which used a Ronald Reagan speech to oppose tariffs.

While the president termed the ads egregious, other factors contributed to the collapse. Internal tensions rose as the North American auto sector felt excluded from the framework. This friction intensified when Industry Minister Mélanie Joly threatened legal action against Stellantis and proposed clawing back subsidies from General Motors.

The situation culminated on October 23, when Canada reduced tariff-free import quotas for these automakers. Trump halted all negotiations that evening. Both nations now face a July 1 deadline to determine the renewal of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement.
