Timothy Mellon Cuts Senate Funding Over Voting Law Failure

Billionaire donor Timothy Mellon has significantly reduced his financial contributions to Senate Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. After providing nearly $200 million to Republican causes in 2024, Mellon has contributed only about $3 million in publicly disclosed donations this cycle and has given nothing publicly to Senate candidates.

The withdrawal of funding follows the failure of Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act. The legislation, a priority for President Donald Trump, sought to impose nationwide voter identification requirements, limit mail-in voting, and require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated the measure failed because there were insufficient votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster.

While Mellon has withheld support for the Senate, he continues to fund House Republicans. He recently made a $20 million private donation to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the primary super PAC for House candidates.
