Russia Strikes Ukraine as Europe Bolsters Eastern Defenses

The Federal Government of Russia launched large-scale aerial strikes across Ukraine on September 23-24, 2026, targeting Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk. In Kyiv, jet-powered drones hit railway infrastructure and petrol stations, killing at least two people. A strike on a farm in Kharkiv killed seven people, and an attack in Donetsk killed four. These strikes followed an address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the UN General Assembly and a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding air defense and peace efforts.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries forced the Kremlin to halt all diesel exports to prioritize domestic supply. This disruption has surged global diesel prices since July. Zelenskyy has ignored requests from the Trump Administration to cease these attacks to stabilize global markets.

European nations are responding to increased Russian hybrid warfare, including suspected sabotage at a Starlink station in Poland and a drone breach in Romania. In response, Czechia scrambled fighter jets to patrol Polish skies. NATO has launched a multinational battle group in Finland and increased contingency planning for its eastern flank. Germany established a permanent 5,000-man armored brigade in Lithuania, while the Government of Poland is building fortifications on the Belarus border using German combat engineers.
