Trump Administration Considers Lifting Sanctions on Russian Investment Fund
The Trump administration is weighing the removal of sanctions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund to incentivize an end to the war in Ukraine.
The Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), a multibillion-dollar government vehicle previously characterized by the Biden administration as a slush fund for Vladimir Putin. This potential move is part of a broader strategy by President Donald Trump to utilize economic incentives to secure a conclusion to the war in Ukraine.
Led by Kirill Dmitriev, the RDIF has already facilitated the first shipments of Russian diesel fuel to the United States following the suspension of diesel sanctions on October 9. Dmitriev has acted as an economic envoy to U.S. negotiators, positioning the fund as a primary go-between for energy deals. The U.S. Treasury Department is currently processing the fund's application for sanctions removal through established procedures.
While the administration pursues this diplomatic path, critics and former officials warn that relaxing economic pressure before a formal settlement in Ukraine is reached could undermine U.S. leverage. The RDIF continues to advocate for the removal of sanctions, which it views as philosophically wrong and destructive.
