Iran Rejects Temporary Ceasefire as US Demands Surrender

Iran has rejected further temporary ceasefires with the United States, demanding a permanent end to the war while threatening to break a US naval blockade.

Diplomatic efforts to end a six-month conflict between the United States and Iran have collapsed following the expiration of a 60-day negotiating window established by a June 17 memorandum of understanding. Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, announced that Tehran rejects any further temporary ceasefires, demanding instead a complete end to the war. Araghchi claimed Iran won both the war and diplomacy, asserting that opponents who once demanded unconditional surrender eventually begged for negotiations on Iranian terms.

United States President Donald Trump has countered by urging Iran to raise the white flag of surrender, stating that Tehran will not agree to the terms he considers necessary. Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf accused US officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, of attempting to squeeze Iran for concessions that were not part of the original framework agreement.

The stalemate has led to increased military tension in the Strait of Hormuz, where the United States maintains a naval blockade. Iranian officials have warned of a shift toward a fully offensive military posture, including potential attacks to break the blockade of the vital energy corridor. While Araghchi praised the mediation efforts of Qatar and Pakistan, he clarified that any resumption of talks remains subject to Iranian conditions.
