Trump and Burnham Clash Over AI and Chagos Islands

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and U.S. President Donald Trump held their first face-to-face meeting on Tuesday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Trump praised Burnham as a "natural business person" and claimed the bilateral relationship is stronger than it was under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The leaders discussed trade, immigration, the Falkland Islands, and the conflict in Ukraine, where Burnham requested increased air-defense interceptor missiles.

Despite the warm personal rapport, the leaders diverged sharply on two key issues. Trump criticized the Government of the United Kingdom's £3.4 billion deal to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling it a "terrible deal" due to the strategic importance of the Diego Garcia military base. On artificial intelligence, Burnham advocated for a "single set of global principles and standards" to be brokered during the UK's G20 presidency. Trump rejected this, stating the U.S. "totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme of control" for super intelligence.

Burnham also addressed Middle East stability, expressing readiness to help open the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. He announced limited military support for Saudi Arabia, authorizing Royal Air Force planes to refuel Saudi jets defending against Houthi rebels. Additionally, Burnham signaled a desire to move past Brexit-driven discord by seeking closer ties with the European Union, specifically lobbying for UK inclusion in the "Made in Europe" scheme to reduce reliance on Chinese components.
