European Nationalist Parties Distance Themselves From Donald Trump

European right-wing leaders are scaling back public ties with Donald Trump due to his declining popularity and disagreements over U.S. foreign policy in Iran.

European nationalist parties are distancing themselves from Donald Trump and his MAGA allies as they prioritize domestic electoral success. While a united front existed in early 2025—supported by figures like Elon Musk and JD Vance—leaders such as Marine Le Pen of France's National Rally and officials from Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) have since scaled back public interactions with the U.S. administration.

This shift is driven by Trump's falling popularity in European polls and strategic disputes over U.S. foreign policy. Specifically, the war in Iran has caused friction, with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel characterizing the campaign as a disaster. Despite this public cooling, some intermediaries suggest that ties between the movements remain active under the radar.

Diplomatic tensions have also escalated between the U.S. and Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz canceled a planned call with Trump after the U.S. president publicly congratulated the AfD following their regional election victories in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Other signs of waning influence include a poorly attended CPAC conference in London and the re-election loss of Viktor Orbán in Hungary, despite support from Trump and Vance.
