UK Warns Citizens of Russian Explosive Drones in Romania

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated travel guidance for British nationals in Romania following an increase in Russian military activity near the Black Sea and the Ukrainian border. The update warns that drones carrying explosives have crossed into Romanian airspace and territorial waters.

Recent incidents include the destruction of a maritime explosive drone by Romanian F-16 fighter jets in August near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. Residents in Galaţi, a city near the Ukrainian border, have reported hearing explosions linked to drone activity. Romanian President Nicuşor Dan condemned the incidents as irresponsible, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the pattern as "hybrid warfare."

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the United Kingdom remains highly vigilant regarding the Russian threat. While the government has not advised against travel to Romania, it urges tourists to avoid military debris and follow instructions provided via the RO-Alert mobile system.
