Israel Holds High-Stakes Election to Determine Netanyahu's Future

Israelis voted on October 27 in a consequential election pitting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against former military chief Gadi Eisenkot amid deep national polarization.

Israelis voted on October 27 to elect the 26th Knesset in the first national election since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks. The contest served as a referendum on Benjamin Netanyahu, who sought to maintain power despite ongoing corruption trials and an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Netanyahu campaigned on a hawkish security doctrine, utilizing a "complete and total endorsement" from U.S. President Donald Trump and warning that a change in leadership could lead to a "second Holocaust."

His primary challenger, former military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot, led the centrist Yashar Party. Eisenkot campaigned on a platform of responsibility and accountability, pledging to establish a state commission of inquiry into the security failures of October 7 and ending military exemptions for ultra-Orthodox citizens. While both candidates opposed a Palestinian state and supported West Bank settlements, they differed sharply on domestic governance and the conduct of the war in Gaza.

Polling leading up to the vote indicated a dead heat, with neither the right-wing bloc nor the opposition projected to secure the 61-seat majority required to govern. This deadlock positions Arab-led parties, such as Ra'am and the Joint List, as potential kingmakers. To prevent civil unrest, the Israel Police deployed a record 22,000 officers under "Operation Capitol," a contingency plan modeled after the 2021 U.S. Capitol unrest. Official results are expected by November 4, after which the president will nominate a candidate to form a governing coalition.
