Modi and Vance Discuss Strategic Ties Amid New US Sanctions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance held a phone call on August 8, 2026, to discuss strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The leaders reaffirmed commitments to cooperate on trade, defense, energy security, critical minerals, and emerging technologies. This diplomatic engagement follows a July meeting in Manila between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian External Affairs Minister S. However, the call occurred as the US Senate passed the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 by an 86-11 vote. This legislation grants President Donald Trump the discretionary authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, a measure that directly impacts India and China to pressure them to stop funding Russian military operations in Ukraine.

Additionally, Vice President Vance addressed regional security, stating that Washington is working to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing tensions with Iran.
