Kim Jong Un Orders Exponential Expansion of Nuclear Arsenal
Kim Jong Un ordered an exponential increase in nuclear and missile production ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's first visit to North Korea in seven years.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered an exponential expansion of the nation's atomic arsenal and missile production during a series of military inspections in early June 2026. During a visit to a newly inaugurated uranium enrichment facility on June 3, Kim claimed that weapons-grade nuclear material production capacity more than doubled over the last five years. He further directed a munitions factory to increase missile production capacity by 2.5 times over the next five years.
Parallel to the nuclear buildup, Kim oversaw sea trials for the 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon and the warship Choe Hyon. He announced a new five-year defense plan prioritizing a nuclear-armed navy, including the construction of 10,000-ton destroyers and secret underwater weapons designed to deliver a deadly blow to enemies.
These military demonstrations immediately preceded a scheduled state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping from June 8 to 9. In anticipation of the summit, Kim Yo Jong declared that North Korea's status as a nuclear power is an irreversible line of no retreat and non-negotiable. She explicitly rejected claims from the White House that President Donald Trump and President Xi had agreed upon a shared goal of denuclearization during a May summit, labeling such reports as false information.
International monitors and allies have reacted with concern. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported a rapid increase in activity at North Korean sites, while the United States and South Korea coordinated plans for South Korea to develop nuclear-powered attack submarines to counter the escalating threat.
