Russia Launches Massive Drone Wave Against Kyiv and Odesa

The Military of Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, deploying 174 drones and four missiles against Ukraine. The strikes targeted Kyiv and Odesa, marking the seventh consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. In Kyiv, a drone hit a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, causing a partial collapse and injuring seven people, while other strikes hit a medical facility and a university during active classes.

In Odesa, Russian attacks destroyed several floors of a 24-story residential building, contributing to a total of at least eight civilian injuries across the regions, including a child. These strikes reflect a tactical shift beginning August 27, moving from occasional swarms to near-continuous drone waves that have paralyzed some Ukrainian businesses.

Ukraine responded with long-range drone strikes across 11 Russian regions, killing two people and wounding 16 in the Belgorod border region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that these operations would effectively close Russian airspace to foreign airlines to force peace negotiations. President Vladimir Putin responded by accusing Zelenskyy of state terrorism and suggested potential strikes on British military facilities if the United Kingdom continues providing weaponry. Despite the aerial intensity, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian offensive momentum on the ground has slowed, with gains remaining limited.
