Trump Administration Files Recusal Motions Against Eight Federal Judges
The Trump administration filed recusal motions and misconduct complaints against eight federal judges in Washington and Minnesota, alleging political bias and activist behavior.
The Trump administration launched a campaign to remove federal judges from active cases, filing three recusal motions and a misconduct complaint targeting eight judges across Washington and Minnesota. Attorney General Todd Blanche characterized the initiative as a necessary response to rogue activist judges.
In Washington, the United States Department of Justice sought to disqualify Judge Ana Reyes after she blocked a presidential plan to build a golf course in a city park. The government alleged that Reyes displayed aggression and disrespect, while Reyes denied the motion and stated that the government's actions regarding tree removal in the park left her "furious."
In Minnesota, the administration targeted judges including Patrick Schiltz for public comments regarding immigration enforcement. The Justice Department argued that judges who take political sides on immigration laws cannot preside over key enforcement initiatives. In response, 174 former judges defended the targeted jurists, stating their comments were necessary protections of the rule of law.
