Israel and Hezbollah Exchange Strikes Despite Trump-Brokered Ceasefire

Military operations and mutual attacks escalated between Israel and Hezbollah in late April 2026, despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that began on April 16 and was extended for three weeks by Donald Trump. Israeli forces conducted dozens of airstrikes and artillery shellings across southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah rocket launchers and weapons depots in districts including Nabatieh and Bint Jbeil. The Israeli military also demolished over 1,000 infrastructure sites, including a symbolic stadium in Bint Jbeil, and forced the evacuation of seven towns north of the Litani River.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operations as necessary to neutralize rocket and drone threats, asserting Israel's "freedom of action" to protect its borders. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem denounced direct peace talks pursued by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun as a "humiliating and unnecessary concession." While U.S. officials continued mediating indirect talks in Washington to establish a long-term security framework, Hezbollah officials dismissed the current ceasefire as meaningless, vowing to continue resistance until Israeli forces withdraw from Lebanese territory.
