Trump Orders Reduction of South Korea Joint Military Exercises

President Donald Trump ordered a substantial reduction in joint military exercises with South Korea, prompting President Lee Jae Myung to call for stronger independent national defense.

President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, characterizing the drills as costly and sending a hostile signal to North Korea. Despite these directives, the exercises began as scheduled on August 17 and are set to run through August 27.

In response, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for the strengthening of independent national defense capabilities during an August 18 cabinet meeting. Lee advocated for the accelerated development of nuclear-powered submarines and emphasized the need to complete the transfer of wartime operational control from the United States during his term. While Lee maintained that the current exercises are defensive, he argued that strengthening domestic capabilities increases South Korea's value as an ally.

National Security Director Wi Sung-lac later positioned South Korea as a pacemaker for the resumption of meaningful dialogue between the United States and North Korea. This follows claims from Trump regarding a positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Additionally, Wi addressed Trump's assertions regarding South Korea's stance on Iranian denuclearization, stating that Seoul is reviewing military contributions to international nonproliferation based on North Korea's history of breaking treaties.
