Trump Threatens Canada Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke Pollution

Donald Trump accused Canada of "willful negligence" in forest management after massive wildfires in Ontario and British Columbia sent hazardous smoke into major U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C. The smoke triggered air quality alerts across 18 states and the District of Columbia, with the Environmental Protection Agency designating air as "hazardous" from Minnesota to Ohio. Trump stated the resulting pollution is "absolutely unacceptable" and threatened to add the "incalculable" costs to existing tariffs Canada is paying.

In addition to presidential threats, U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno introduced the CANADA FIRE Act to sanction Canadian officials, which would block assets and revoke visas for forestry and emergency response leadership. Republican lawmakers from Michigan suggested the U.S. might deploy agencies across the border to manage fires directly if Canada fails to act.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected these accusations, arguing that climate change is "everyone's responsibility," including that of the United States. Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended the province's record, noting a base budget increase to $150 million for wildfires and urging U.S. politicians to send support rather than complain. Minister Eleanor Olszewski further highlighted a $12 billion investment in forest sustainability since 2020.

Domestically, Ford faced criticism from NDP Leader Marit Stiles, who alleged the province ignored climate commitments and allowed firefighting forces to shrink. Meanwhile, the fires have devastated remote Indigenous communities, with the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation reported as being "burnt to ashes."
