Donald Trump Permanently Appoints Marco Rubio as National Security Adviser

Donald Trump signed a commission permanently appointing Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the national security adviser. Rubio had previously been serving in the role in an acting capacity.

This move makes Rubio the first individual to hold both the State Department and national security adviser positions simultaneously since Henry Kissinger. The vacancy was created following the May 2025 departure of former national security adviser Mike Waltz, who left the post after the Signalgate scandal involving the accidental inclusion of a journalist in a private Signal group chat regarding military plans against the Houthis in Yemen.

Despite speculation regarding a 2028 Republican presidential bid, Rubio stated in an interview with RCN that he has no current plans to launch a White House campaign and remains focused on his dual responsibilities.
