World Uyghur Congress Urges Trump to Confront Xi Jinping

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and 37 members of the US Congress called on President Donald Trump to address the treatment of Uyghurs and China's Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. Lawmakers warned that the law poses significant risks to Uyghurs, Tibetans, and dissidents living abroad.

These appeals coincided with a series of international diplomatic efforts. On September 22, a Uyghur delegation led by WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun attended the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council to demand international accountability. Additionally, the WUC and the Uyghur Zoulum-Stop Movement hosted a RightsCon session focused on the prevalence of forced labor within global supply chains.

The push for action follows a September 23 statement from more than 130 UN human rights experts. The experts demanded stronger global measures to combat transnational repression, specifically citing the use of arbitrary detention and digital surveillance against targeted populations.
