Democrats Seize Control of House and Senate in Midterms

Democrats flipped both congressional chambers in a sweeping victory, ending Republican control and setting the stage for investigations into President Donald Trump's administration.

Democrats won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 4, 2026, midterm elections, creating a divided government for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency. The shift included a projected 70-seat margin in the House and historic breakthroughs in traditionally Republican strongholds, including the election of Gina Hinojosa as the first Latina governor of Texas and Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor of Georgia. In Florida, Byron Donalds became the first Black Republican governor.

Voter dissatisfaction with the economy, rising grocery and energy costs, the war in Iran, and immigration enforcement drove the results. President Trump initially threatened to use his veto power against Democratic leaders before later stating he would work with them. Speaker Mike Johnson characterized the election as a contrast between "common sense and crazy," vowing that House Republicans would act as a "firewall" against Democratic retribution.

Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer intend to use their majorities to block judicial and executive-branch nominees and reverse parts of Trump's tax laws. The House Oversight Committee, led by incoming chair Robert Garcia, pledged investigations into the president's personal finances, the Epstein files, and the administration's immigration crackdown. Senate Republicans, led by John Thune, vowed to block what they termed "Democrat extremism.

State-level results mirrored the federal trend, with Democrats sweeping constitutional offices in Connecticut and all statewide races in Delaware, while making rare legislative gains in South Dakota.
