Trump Proposes Renaming Lake Ontario Amid Canada Trade War

President Donald Trump announced that the United States is giving serious consideration to renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, linking the move to the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations with Canada. The proposal follows a pattern of geographic renaming, including a January 2025 executive order that renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Canadian officials, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, rejected the proposal as a matter of national sovereignty.

The diplomatic rift escalated after the Government of the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian exports, including textiles and Christmas lights. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by withdrawing Canadian negotiators from Washington and implementing matching retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion of U.S. imports. Carney stated that Canada will diversify its international relationships due to a lack of trust in the U.S., citing new agreements with China, India, Germany, and South Korea.

Disputes over the cause of the failed talks emerged, with Carney claiming U.S. officials threatened French-language protections for streaming services in Quebec. Trump denied these claims, asserting he would never interfere with the French language. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the renaming proposal as rhetoric, emphasizing that Ontario is a primary trading partner for numerous U.S. states. Senior counsellor Peter Navarro defended the U.S. tariffs, attributing the collapse of the deal to politics across the border.
