Trump Announces Canada Tariffs and Iran Sanctions Escalation

President Donald Trump announced a major escalation in trade tensions with Canada, declaring that tariffs on all cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel will increase to 50% effective January 1, 2027. Trump justified the move by claiming Canada has "been ripping off the United States of America for years" and citing a $60 billion deficit. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to retaliate.

Simultaneously, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched Operation Economic Outcast, a sanctions package targeting Iran and any entities enabling its economic activity. Bessent warned that Chinese banks could be targeted if they facilitate Iranian oil transactions, stating that those who turn Iranian oil into money will be targeted.

In a separate legal development, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 to lift a lower-court injunction that had blocked a March executive order from Trump aimed at restricting mail-in voting. The court found a lawsuit brought by 23 Democratic-led states was premature because the administration had not yet fully implemented the policies. The order directs the Department of Homeland Security to create state citizenship lists and tasks the U.S. Postal Service with refusing delivery to individuals not on those lists.

Despite the Supreme Court ruling, a nationwide injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani on August 11 remains in effect. This continues to block the Postal Service from implementing the procedures for the November 3 midterm elections.
